Biography

Dr. Ryan Zarychanski is a professor of medicine at the University of Manitoba (hematology & critical care) internationally recognized clinical trialist and research leader. He holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Clinical

Trials and serves as scientific director of both Aurora Clinical Research and the George & Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation, Manitoba’s SPOR/SUPPORT unit.

His research focuses on hematologic aspects of critical illness where he leads trials in the fields of sepsis, anticoagulation, and blood conservation while advancing innovative clinical trial methods to integrate clinical trials into routine healthcare delivery.

Building on ward-based research infrastructure Dr. Zarychanski developed in COVID-19 pandemic, he currently serves as Chair of GUARD_Resp, an international platform trial that evaluates therapies to improve outcomes for patients with pneumonia. Dr. Zarychanski led the TRACTION trial, a landmark policy randomized trial that demonstrated the ability of tranexamic to safely reduce blood transfusion in patients having major non-cardiac surgical procedures.

Dr. Zarychanski has secured more than $100 million in research funding as a primary investigator, published over 250 peer-reviewed articles, and built research infrastructure that supports investigators across Manitoba, Canada, and internationally.
