Research

Research interests

Natural systems agriculture for the Canadian Prairies finding solutions that are informed by natural ecosystems' structure, function, and diversity. I design and test agricultural production practices that encompass lessons we learn from the ultimate experts in our agricultural environments - nature and the farmers that work in these systems every day. Through participatory and interdisciplinary research, I am interested in understanding the benefits and trade-offs of functional crop diversity in space and time, crop-livestock integration, and biologically mediated nutrients to increase productivity, resiliency, and efficient nutrient cycling (N, P).

Current research projects

  • Maintaining the Glenlea Long-term Rotation - Canada's oldest organic-conventional crop rotation and collaborating with multi-disciplinary researchers.
  • Crop-livestock integration
  • Legume-intensified organic crop rotation study (nutrient cycling, weed dynamics)
  • Participatory plant breeding
  • Greenhouse Gas (GHG) monitoring and modelling (using HOLOs) in organic vs. conventional rotations
