Plenary Session
Dr. Brian Beres
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
Biography
Dr. Beres is a senior research scientist at AAFC - Lethbridge and Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta. In this role, he introduced the Genotype × Environment × Management (G×E×M) framework to Canadian agriculture, reinforcing a systems agronomy approach to shape how cropping systems are designed and optimized under climate variability. His impact on academia and industry has been recognized on several occasions including the Alberta Seed Growers Honorary Life Award; Fellow and Distinguished Agronomist – Canadian Society of Agronomy; Canadian Journal of Plant Science (CJPS) Best Paper (2013 and 2025); and CJPS Outstanding Associate Editor. Dr. Beres publishes in the areas of agronomy and crop science and has been the author or co-author of 128 peer-reviewed research articles, 2 edited books and 2 book chapters. He served as Editor-In-Chief for the Canadian Journal of Plant Science and Special Issues Editor for Frontiers in Plant Science. Dr. Beres has several international collaborations and represented Canada on the Research Committee of the Wheat Initiative, where he also developed and was the inaugural Chair of an Expert Working Group for global agronomy wheat research.
Dr. Jochum Wiersma

Biography
Dr. Jochum Wiersma has been the small grains extension specialist at the University of Minnesota for the past 30 years. In that time, he focused his research on ways to maximize grain yield and minimize the cost of production per bushel. Past work has included work on seeding rates, the use of fungicide to combat FHB and control diseases, and the use of foliar nitrogen to improve grain protein content. More recently, he has explored the concept of yield gaps and whether it makes economic sense to close the gap between actual and attainable grain yield.
Kristen MacMillan
University of Manitoba
Biography
Kristen MacMillan is a research agronomist at the University of Manitoba where she focuses on soybean, dry bean and pea production practices for Manitoba cropping systems. She also teaches courses in crop production and stays connected to farmers and agronomists through extension, many of whom she met in her previous role with the Manitoba Pulse & Soybean Growers.
Kristen obtained her agriculture diploma, B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Manitoba and recently entered a PhD program. Outside of research and education, Kristen keeps her boots on the ground, raising crops, cattle and children, with her husband on their family farm.
Clinton Jurke
BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada Inc
Biography
Clinton Jurke is the Regional Technical Services Manager at BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada Inc., which means he provides technical support for InVigor canola and manages a team of Tech Services reps. Clinton resides near Lloydminster where farms with his brother. Prior to BASF, Clint worked for the Canola Council of Canada, and he has worked in canola pathology, breeding, and agronomy for Advanta Seeds and Monsanto. Clinton has ag degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and University of Manitoba. Clint also strongly dislikes gophers, caraganas, and changing clocks to mountain standard time.
Brunel Sabourin
Antara Agronomy Services Ltd
Biography
Growing up on a farm, Brunel has nurtured a lifelong passion for agriculture and sustainable food production. Referred to by some as the “Guru of the Red River Valley,” he brings over 30 years of experience, consulting on a diverse array of crops including cereals, oilseeds, pulses and corn.
Together with his wife, Jennifer, Brunel operates Antara Agronomy Services Ltd, a consulting firm dedicated to on-farm research and benchmarking. His approach emphasizes the importance of integrating local agronomic research with production data, empowering producers with the knowledge they need to navigate the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions.
Brunel is a firm believer that equipping producers with the right information leads to improved decision-making, increased profitability, reduced stress, and ultimately, a more enjoyable farming experience. His commitment to advancing agricultural practices and supporting local farmers makes him a respected voice in the industry.
Scott Perkin
Perkin Land & Cattle Co
Biography
Scott is a farmer from Elgin, MB. Scott and his brother Darryl grow wheat, oats, canola, edible beans, soybeans and corn and have a purebred simmental herd in southwest mb. They also run a seed retail business focused on corn and soybean genetics for local producers. Scott has a passion for new technologies and looking for ways to make them work on their farm. Scott utilizes on farm trials, new practices and data to help increase production on their farm.

Alex Barrie
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness
Biography
Alex Barrie is the Soil Management Engineer with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA), based in Brighton, Ontario. He grew up on a dairy farm and has worked with farm equipment his entire life, giving him a practical understanding of the challenges farmers face. Alex holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He collaborates with researchers and focuses on soil compaction, tire and axle loads, and how soil structure responds under varying moisture and management conditions. By combining engineering principles with agricultural science, Alex works to advance knowledge that supports long-term soil health and productivity.
Chris Holzapfel
Indian Head Agricultural Research Foundation
Biography
Raised on a mixed farm in southeast Saskatchewan, Chris Holzapfel has over 25 years of experience with field crop research. His career began as a plot worker with AAFC and continues as Research Manager with IHARF, a non-profit producer group he has been with since 2005. Chris holds a Diploma from Olds College, BSc from the University of Lethbridge, and an MSc from the University of Manitoba’s Department of Soil Science. While soil fertility is his primary interest, Chris's work with IHARF covers a broad range of agronomic issues and crops, focussing on applied research and demonstrations intended to develop practical solutions to today’s farming challenges.
Ashley Ammeter

Biography
Ashley Ammeter is the Whole Farm Specialist with Manitoba Crop Alliance. Ashley grew up on a grains and oilseeds farm in Manitoba and received her B.Sc. in Agriculture, and M.Sc. in Plant Science from the University of Manitoba. In her role as Whole Farm Specialist, Ashley is responsible for providing knowledge and understanding of a whole-farm approach to crop production and extension of research results that are cross-commodity in nature.
Dr. Nasem Badreldin

Biography
Dr. Nasem Badreldin is an assistant professor in digital agronomy at the University of Manitoba, Canada. He received his PhD in Physical Geography from Ghent University (UGent) in Belgium (December 2013) and his MSc in Physical Land Resources from the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering in UGent (September 2008). He worked previously as a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Earth Observation Sciences (CEOS) in the Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta in Canada and at the Dept. of Soil Science at the University of Manitoba, and as a Modeling Analyst in the Cumulative Impacts and Science Branch at the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment.
David Whetter

Biography
David is a Principal Soil Scientist (Pedologist), Agroecologist and Registered Professional Agrologist. He has 25 years of consulting experience in agricultural-environmental planning, permitting and management. His technical focus is on the soil-landscape environment, agricultural management systems, and agricultural water management. His core experience is in agricultural irrigation, drainage, and soil salinity.
David is founder and President of AgriEarth Consulting Ltd., a firm established to add value and provide environmental solutions to agriculture across the Canadian Prairies and beyond.

Justine Cornelsen
BrettYoung Seeds
Biography
Justine Cornelsen is the Agronomic and Regulatory Services Manager with BrettYoung Seeds. She carries over 10 years of agricultural and environmental experience from previous positions with the Canola Council of Canada, Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, and Parks Canada.
Justine graduated in 2014 from Brandon University with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 2021 she completed her Master of Science degree at the University of Manitoba in Plant Science.
She is a plant disease enthusiast! And when she’s not out scouting fields, you can likely find her back on the farm with all her horses, cows, and ducks.
Thomas Ernst
Corteva Agriscience
Biography
Thomas Ernst is a Senior Research associate with Corteva Agriscience based in Ardrossan, Alberta. Thomas coordinates canola pathology research across western Canada including blackleg, clubroot and verticillium disease phenotyping trials. He completed his BSc in ecology and MSc in Plant Pathology at the University of Alberta and is currently a PhD student at the UofA studying quantitative resistance to blackleg in canola.
Dr. John Gavloski

Biography
John is an entomologist with Manitoba Agriculture based out of Carman. He conducts monitoring programs for some of the more common insect pests of crops, and provides information on insects, both beneficial and potential pests, to farmers, agronomists and those working in agriculture.John does numerous presentations and information updates for agronomists and farmers, and co-produces a weekly Manitoba Crop Pest Update during the spring and summer.He has worked for Manitoba Agriculture since 1997.
John has a bachelor’s degree in environmental biology and a M. Sc. in entomology from the
Aside from entomology, John also enjoys cycling and observing almost any type of wildlife.
In this presentation, John will discuss three weevils that were at some quite high levels in some areas of Manitoba.
Dr. Xuehua Zhang

Biography
Dr. Xuehua Zhang is a Senior Plant Health Scientist at Bayer Crop Science, specializing in canola disease management and disease resistance breeding. She earned her B.Sc. in Plant Biotechnology and M.Sc. in Plant Breeding from Sichuan Agricultural University, China, and completed her Ph.D. in Plant Pathology at the University of Manitoba in 2016.
Xuehua began her career at Monsanto/Bayer as a Plant Health Research Associate before advancing to Discovery Scientist in 2017 and Senior Scientist in 2019. She currently leads the Canola Plant Health program within North America Breeding, where she oversees controlled environment and field disease phenotyping, drives native trait discovery and risk assessment efforts, and contributes to breeding strategies for disease resistance. With over 20 years of experience in oilseed rape/canola breeding and more than 14 years of experience in combating canola diseases - including blackleg, clubroot, verticillium stripe, and sclerotinia stem rot - Xuehua brings deep expertise in disease resistance breeding and integrated disease management strategies.
Andrew Thostenson
North Dakota State University
Biography
Andrew Thostenson was responsible for administering the training and certification of private and commercial pesticide applicators across North Dakota. He retired in 2024 and now holds emeritus status with NDSU. He was both the Cooperative Extension Pesticide Coordinator and the State Lead Agency Manager for Certification and Training.
He has both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Plant Sciences from the University of Idaho.
He has four years of experience as a county extension agent in Washington State and North Dakota. He owned and operated a seed and crop management consulting company in the Pacific Northwestern United States for ten years. He was the NDSU Pesticide Program Specialist for 27 years.
He is a former President and is a Fellow with the American Association of Pesticide Safety Educators (AAPSE). He is the Past-Chair of EPA’s Certification and Training Assessment Group (CTAG).
Brendan Metzger

Biography
Brendan Metzger is a Sr Herbicide Biologist and Manager of the Manitoba Research Farm with BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada. Raised on a grain farm in Ontario, Brendan earned a BSc in Crop Science, and an MSc in Weed Science, both from the University of Guelph. As part of his role with BASF, Brendan leads experimental herbicide research and development projects that support Western Canadian cropping systems.

Dr. Alexander Lindsey

Biography
Dr. Alex Lindsey is an Associate Professor of Crop Ecophysiology in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science. Since joining the faculty in 2015, he has focused on how crops interact with environmental factors to influence growth and yield. He also teaches courses on crop production, plant physiology, and seed science and serves as coordinating advisor for the Agronomy specialization of the Sustainable Plant Systems major. Dr. Lindsey received his PhD in Agronomy from The Ohio State University in 2015 under Dr. Peter Thomison, and has been a Certified Crop Adviser since 2009 and Certified Professional Agronomist since 2016. Prior to coming to Ohio, he received his BS and MS degrees from Michigan State University.
Dr. Michael Wunsch
North Dakota State University
Carrington Research Extension Center
Biography
Michael Wunsch is a plant pathologist with North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center. His research and outreach efforts are primarily focused on addressing disease management problems in broadleaf crops grown in North Dakota, with an emphasis on improving the management of white mold in dry edible beans, soybeans, and sunflowers and improving the management of root and foliar diseases of field peas, chickpeas, and lentils. Michael obtained his B.S. from the University of Missouri and his Ph.D. from Cornell University, and he commenced his employment with the NDSU research center in Carrington in 2010. Michael is originally from Montana. Dr. Clair Keene
North Dakota State University
Biography
Dr. Clair Keene has been the small grain and corn extension agronomist for North Dakota State University since 2021. Prior to joining the faculty, she was the extension agronomist at the NDSU Williston Research Extension Center in Williston, ND from 2016-2021. She earned her PhD in agronomy with an emphasis in weed science from Pennsylvania State University. Her research and extension program focuses on small grain variety evaluation, management of Fusarium Head Blight in spring wheat and durum and improving corn agronomy.
Dr. Santosh Kumar

Biography
Santosh Kumar, PhD is a Research Scientist at the Brandon Research and Development Center (BRDC) for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). Kumar completed his master’s degree at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi, India before moving to Canada for his PhD program. As a PhD student at the University of Manitoba (UM) Kumar worked on barley physiology and genetics. He currently lives in Brandon, Manitoba with his wife and two children.

Biography
Alex grew up on a cow-calf farm west of Clear Lake, near Riding Mountain National Park. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 2019 with an agronomy major and soil science minor. For the last six years, Alex has worked as an Agrologist for Ducks Unlimited Canada, managing winter wheat and perennial forage research and landowner programming in southwestern Manitoba.
