Research summary

My research focuses on the clinicopathologic and molecular characterization of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and their association with human papillomavirus (HPV). I aim to bridge clinical presentation with diagnostic pathology to improve early detection and patient outcomes in oral cancer.

My work also explores oral manifestations of systemic diseases and the psychological impact of global health crises—such as the COVID-19 pandemic—on dental professionals and students. Through national and international collaborations, I integrate clinical insights with molecular approaches to advance evidence-based diagnostic strategies.

Ultimately, my goal is to enhance understanding of oral disease mechanisms and contribute to improving oral cancer screening, awareness, and prevention within both academic and community settings.

Teaching philosophy

My teaching style is best described as interactive, student-centered, and compassion-driven. I believe that learning is most effective when students feel supported, respected, and inspired to think critically. I strive to create a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, challenge ideas, and actively participate in discussions without fear of judgment.

I break complex topics into simpler, logical components and use a case-based, discussion-oriented approach to promote reasoning and clinical application. My teaching sessions are dynamic and conversational, often guided by questions that stimulate curiosity and deeper understanding. I emphasize the “why” behind each concept to help learners appreciate its relevance to real-life clinical practice. As a mentor, I aim to model empathy, integrity, and lifelong learning. I listen to students’ perspectives, value their feedback, and adjust my methods to support diverse learning needs.

Many of my students have expressed appreciation for my openness and genuine care—qualities that make them feel comfortable seeking guidance both academically and personally. I also encourage reflection and self-assessment, helping learners recognize their strengths and areas for improvement.

Through consistent encouragement, constructive feedback, and accessibility, I aim to instill confidence and autonomy. Ultimately, my goal is to inspire curiosity and professionalism, nurturing learners who not only excel academically but also develop into compassionate, ethical, and reflective practitioners.

Biography

Over the course of my academic career, I have developed a strong foundation in clinical practice, teaching, and academic leadership in the fields of oral pathology and oral medicine. My professional journey has taken me across four countries—India, Malaysia, the United States, and Canada—each providing unique perspectives on oral health education and patient care.

I began my career in India, where I gained extensive experience in diagnostic oral pathology and undergraduate dental teaching. This was followed by my appointment at the International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia, where I further refined my teaching philosophy, developed interactive learning modules, and participated in curriculum design and assessment strategies. My commitment to student engagement and innovation in pedagogy earned me recognition for excellence in teaching and mentorship.

Subsequently, my move to North America provided opportunities to expand my clinical and academic expertise. I collaborated with colleagues at Southern Illinois University and contributed to international research initiatives, while simultaneously engaging in community-based oral health outreach.

At the University of Manitoba, where I currently serve as faculty in the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, I continue to balance clinical service, research, and teaching with a deep commitment to student learning and patient-centered care. I have spearheaded several oral cancer awareness and screening initiatives and actively mentor undergraduate and BSc Dent students.

Through these diverse experiences, I have cultivated a professional identity grounded in compassion, collaboration, and lifelong learning, continually striving to enhance both the academic and clinical dimensions of oral healthcare.
