The School of Dental Hygiene and the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry are proud to celebrate the achievements of our students through a range of awards, honours, scholarships and prizes.

Many of these awards have been made possible through the generosity of our alumni, community partners and members of the dental profession. Recipients are chosen by the School and College in recognition of their hard work, commitment, and contributions to the field of oral health.

School of Dental Hygiene awards Year II

Deans Honours – Awarded to students who attain a minimum (sessional combined fall and winter term) Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.8.

Dr. Bonnie J. Trodden Scholarship in Dental Hygiene – To the student who: has achieved a sessional GPA of at least 3.0 in the penultimate year of study (min. 80% of a full course load); achieved a min. grade of B+ in course HYGN 1242; shows promise of being an excellent clinician; is a positive role model for other students; and has demonstrated a professional attitude in his/her relationship with instructors, clients, staff, and fellow students.

Endowment Fund Scholarship in Dental Hygiene – Awarded to the student with high achievement in the current year of study; the ability to communicate well with academic staff, support staff, patients and fellow students; displays leadership ability and is a positive role model for other students.

Manitoba Dental Association Scholarship in Dental Hygiene – Awarded to the student who attains the highest GPA in second-year Dental Hygiene.
Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association Award for Excellence in 2nd Year – For successful completion of the second year; having achieved a min. cumulative GPA of 3.0; for best incorporation of didactic and lab work in the clinical setting.

Ronda Schwartz Memorial Prize in Dental Hygiene – For the student who has successfully completed second year; who has demonstrated outstanding potential in the area of professionalism and is a positive role model to other students, staff and faculty.

Sigma Phi Alpha Award in Dental Hygiene – For a minimum GPA of 3.0; display of leadership potential, professional attitude and being actively involved in service to the community and/or the profession.

Student Recognition – Dentistry Year I

Dean’s Honours – Awarded to students who attain a minimum (sessional combined fall and winter term) Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.8.

Class of 2000 Spirit Award – Offered to the student with excellent academic standing and who has made a significant contribution to bringing the class together as a cohesive and supportive group.

Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry Bronze Medals (2 Medals) – Awarded to the student with the highest standing in: 1) ORLB 1302 Cell & Tissue Biology; 2) ORLB 1310 Head, Neck and Nervous System Pt. 1.

Class of 2001 Legacy Prize – Awarded to the student who has shown the most improvement throughout the Dental Anatomy Course.
Endowment Fund Scholarship In Dentistry – Awarded to the student in first-year dentistry who has: a high achieve-ment in the current year of study; the ability to communicate well with academic staff, support staff, patients and fellow students; leadership ability and is a positive role model for other students.

Leonard Krueger Scholarship – To the student who has completed, with high standing, first-year in the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry and proceeds in the next ensuing academic year to second-year Dentistry.

Manitoba Blue Cross Dental Scholarship – Available to a student who achieves high standing in first year Dentistry and proceeds in the next ensuing academic year to second-year Dentistry.

The Claude and Lou Ellen Ibbott Dental Education Scholarship – Each year, beginning in 2024-2025 and ending in 2028-2029, one scholarship valued at $10,000 will be offered to an undergraduate student in any year of study of the Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) program in the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry; and has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5. Preference will be given to a student who has graduated from a Manitoba or Saskatchewan high school and who has participated in fishing, golfing, canoeing, sailing, curling and/or skiing. Application is required.

Student Recognition – Dentistry Year II

Dr. Jones & Katie Young Scholarship in Dentistry – To the student in second-year Dentistry who has achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 and who has demonstrated a professional attitude in his/her interaction with patients, instructors, staff and fellow students and is a positive role model to fellow students.

Dr. Paul Bookhalter Award – To the student who has achieved high standing in the didactic component in the course Periodontology (DDSS 2100) and has demonstrated a professional attitude in his/her relationships with instructors, patients and other students.

Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry Bronze Medals (3 Medals) – To the student with highest standing in: 1) ORLB 2312 Structure and Function of Major Organ Systems; 2) ORLB 2300 Pathology & Microbiology I; and 3) ORLB 2330 Nutrition in Dentistry.

Dental Faculty Women’s Association Scholarship – To a student who, in completing second-year Dentistry, has shown significant improvement over the first two years, and proceeds to third-year Dentistry.

Robert Day Memorial Award – To the student who: has completed the second year with satisfactory standing; has been voted by classmates as the student who best exemplifies a propensity to aid classmates in all aspects of life during first and second year, inside and out of the classroom.

Endowment Fund Scholarship in Dentistry – To the student who has: a high achievement in the current year of study; communicates well with academic and support staff, patients and students; and is a positive role model for other students.

Dr. John M. Grahame Scholarship – To the student in second-year Dentistry who best combines scholastic achievement, general character and participation in extra-curricular activities. Established and funded by the alumni of distinction gala and by University of Manitoba Dental Alumni Association donations.

Sadie Karr Memorial Book Prize – To the student with the highest standing in RSTD 2532 Fixed Prosthodontics.

Manitoba Blue Cross Dental Scholarship – To the student who achieves high standing in second-year Dentistry.

Dr. Biruta A. Osins Scholarship – To the student who has the highest standing in the combined laboratory and didactic components of the course RSTD 2520 Endodontology I.

Troy Suelzle Memorial Award in Dentistry – To the second year student who: has achieved a minimum degree grad point average of 3.0; has shown the most improvement in crown and bridge fixed prosthetics, based on practical and didactic test scores, during the academic session for which the award is tenable.

Dr. William F. Campbell Scholarship in Orthodontics – For highest standing in Orthodontics II.

Student Recognition – Dentistry Year III

Dean’s Honours – Awarded to students who attain a minimum sessional (combined following winter term) Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.80.

Aurum Ceramic Laboratories Scholarship – Presented to the student with the highest standing in PDSD 3532 Fixed Prosthodontics II.

Dr. Jones & Katie Young Scholarship in Dentistry – To the student in second-year Dentistry who has achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 and who has demonstrated a professional attitude in his/her interaction with patients, instructors, staff and fellow students and is a positive role model to fellow students.

Canadian Academy of Endodontics – Dr. Cal Hawrish Memorial Scholarship – Awarded to a student completing their first clinical year of study, with the highest achievement in clinical endodontics.

Martin Nevile Scholarship – For attaining a high academic standing in Pediatric I and II, has a minimum of 3.5 grade point average, demonstrated a high level of care and judgement in the treatment of pediatric patients, interacts well with pediatric dental patients and their parents, as well as staff and their peers.

Western Canada Dental Society Student Fellowship Prize – Awarded to the student who recognizes undergraduate students who exemplify the values of professionalism, friendship, leadership, ability to bring colleagues together, camaraderie, sportsmanship and is of a character to make a distinguished contribution to the profession and community.

Dr. William Bloom Prize – To the student who attains the highest standing in DDSS 3132 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Manly Bowles Memorial Scholarship – To the student attaining the highest standing in PDSD 3402 Orthodontics – III.

Dr. Edgar N. Cole Memorial Scholarship – To the third-year student with the highest standing in DDSS 3120 Pain & Anxiety Control.

Endowment Fund Scholarship in Dentistry – Awarded to the student who has a high achievement in the current year of study; the ability to communicate well with academic staff, support staff, patients and fellow students; leadership ability and is a positive role model for other students.

Dr. Taras Yuri Snihurowycz Scholarship – Offered (one scholarship) to an undergraduate student who: is enrolled full-time (minimum 80% course load) in the third year of the DMD program in the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba; has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5; demonstrates outstanding clinical achievement in the field of prosthodontics, specifically in the laboratory component of the course; demonstrates passion and enthusiasm toward the profession of dentistry and shows outstanding qualities of character.

Dr. J.B. Rumberg and Dr. Hester Rumberg Memorial Prize – To the student with the highest standing in DDSS 3112 Oral Diagnosis and Radiology.

Dr. Joseph Freeman Memorial Book Prize – To the student who attains the highest standing in DDSS 3132 Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Lawrence Stockton Scholarship – Awarded to a student who is entering their final year of the International Dentist Degree program (IDDP); has achieved a minimum sessional grade point average of 3.0; is the top ranked student in clinical performance at the end of the first year of study in the IDDP program. Has demonstrated a strong ability to communicate with academic and support staff, patients and fellow students; has qualities of a positive role model to fellow students.

Dr. M.H. Garvin Prize – For high scholastic achievement in Periodontology by a Third Year Dentistry student who has displayed a conscientious concern in the care of patients and a high level of professional responsibility.

Dr. N.H. Greenberg Memorial Book Award – To the student with highest standing in RSTD 3532 Fixed Prosthodontics II.

Josephine and Louis Green Scholarship – To the student with the highest standing in DDSS 3102 Clinical Periodontology.

Dr. and Mrs. T. Hechter Award – To the student who has demonstrated superior ability in major types of restorative treatment and demonstrated knowledge and ability in the principle of examination, diagnosis and treatment planning; has demonstrated professionalism and good behaviour patterns to patients and others.

International College of Dentists (Canadian Section) Scholarship – To a student based on scholastic record, general character and participation in extra-curricular activities.

Dr. A.V. Johnson Memorial Book Prize – For the highest standing in RSTD 3542 Complete and Removable Partial Denture Prosthodontics.
Dr. Peter Jackin Memorial Scholarship – To the student enrolled full-time in the fourth year of dentistry who has demonstrated the greatest improvement in fixed prosthodontics clinical skills in the second and third years of the curriculum.

Drs. R.E. Jordan & M. Suzuki Award in Operative Dentistry – To the student attaining the highest standing in RSTD 3512 Operative Dentistry – III.

Dr. Jack King Memorial Scholarship – To the student who attains the highest standing in DDSS 3102 Periodontology – II and DDSS 3112 Oral Diagnosis and Radiology.

Manitoba Dental Association Scholarship – To the student who attains the highest standing in ORLB 2300 Pathology and Microbiology I and ORLB 3300 Pathology and Microbiology II.

Ross McIntyre Scholarship – To the student who achieved high academic standing (min GPA 3.0); has demonstrated:
(i) a strong ability to communicate with academic and support staff, patients and fellow students; (ii) leadership qualities; and
(iii) qualities of a positive role model to fellow students.

Leslie Michael Shelton Memorial Scholarship – To the student with high achievement and improvement over the three years of study; participates in extra-mural activities of the College (sports, social activities, student councils); shows evidence of ability to communicate well with patients, students and staff.

Dr. Cal Waddell – Western Canada Dental Society Memorial Scholarship – Awarded to the student who has completed the penultimate year of the DMD Program; possesses the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character and humanity deemed likely to lead to distinction in the profession and the community.

F. James Marshall Scholarship in Endodontology – Offered to the student who has completed the third year of full-time study in the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry and who has attained high standing in didactic and clinical Endodontics.

Archie McNicol Prize – Awarded to the student in third year Dentistry who attains the highest standing in DDSS 3162 Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Student Special Recognition

Dr. A. W. Hogg Scholarship – Awarded for highest standing in the second year of the Dental Hygiene program. The recipient of this award must be on Dean’s Honour List.

Isbister Undergraduate Scholarship in Dental Hygiene – Awarded to the Dental Hygiene student with the highest academic standing.

Dr. A. W. Hogg Undergraduate Scholarship – Awarded on the basis of eligibility for Dean’s honour list and for the highest average standing in years 1-3.

Isbister Undergraduate Scholarship – Awarded to the Dentistry student with the highest sessional GPA irrespective of the year, excluding the graduate class.

Faculty Special Recognition

W. W. Wood Award for Excellence in Dental Education – Awarded for exceptional teaching by the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry.
