Research summary

Dr. Kirouac’s research is in the area of behavioral neurosciences and is focused on understanding how brain circuits translate emotional experiences into motivated behavior. Dr. Kirouac’s laboratory applies anatomical, pharmacological, and molecular techniques to investigate how complex interconnected brain circuits mediate adaptive behaviors in animal models. His research is funded primarily through Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Current research interests include:

  • Neuroanatomy of the brain’s emotional and behavioral circuits
  • Contribution of the midline thalamus to fear and anxiety in an animal model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Neurobiology of stress

Biography

Dr. Kirouac is a professor in the Department of Oral Biology with cross-appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry and Human Anatomy and Cell Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Kirouac combined his interest in animal behavior with his training in neuroanatomy and physiology to develop a unique expertise for investigating brain circuits that regulate fear and anxiety. He is an internationally recognized expert on the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT) which has become a hot area of research being pursued in many laboratories around the world. Much of the current interest on the PVT has been driven by his research on the PVT staring in the mid-1990s and ongoing research from Dr. Kirouac’s group continue to influence research on the PVT and the thalamus.
