Dr. Laura MacDonald is an associate professor in the School of Dental Hygiene, Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba.
Early in her career, Dr. MacDonald began teaching with the School and College. She has been teaching with the UM since 1986. Dr. MacDonald is committed to serving those who have limited access to oral health prevention and oral disease treatment. She has worked as a dental hygienist in a variety of practice settings, such as periodontal dental practices, remote northern communities, and personal care homes.
Dr. MacDonald’s focus has been on teaching. She is committed to teaching excellence and she is always in search of innovative and effective teaching/learning strategies, as well as assessment that offers the learner authentic professional experience. She has long served the teaching/learning community at the UM, for example, as a faculty mentor for UM Center for Advanced Teaching and Learning.
She has served, and continues to serve, the University, RFHS, College, School, and profession in a variety of ways. A key focus of her service has been on interprofessional collaboration for better health of Manitobans.
Dr. MacDonald currently serves as College Lead with the RFHS Office of Interprofessional Collaboration, past-president of the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association, member of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association Research Advisory Board, and an active member of working groups with the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her teaching and service.
