BorderPass is an independent online platform of licensed Canadian immigration lawyers and immigration experts who help individuals confidently file their Canadian immigration applications.

The University of Manitoba has entered into an agreement with BorderPass to provide this service at no cost to newly admitted international degree-seeking undergraduate students. For students who are visiting or on exchange can connect with UM's International Centre for additional support when applying for their immigration applications.

Get Started with BorderPass

You can create a free BorderPass account with a personal email address and your UM student number, which can be found in the "My Information" section of your application portal and is a nine-digit number that starts with 008. 

While using BorderPass is free for UM students, you will still be responsible for any IRCC costs associated with submitting your study permit application. This includes the application fee and biometrics (if applicable). BorderPass will provide you with clear information about all costs and fees before they are charged to you. You can opt out of using BorderPass at any time.

What is BorderPass and why should I use it?

BorderPass provides newly admitted international undergraduate students access top quality Canadian immigration services. By using BorderPass, students receive support and guidance on their immigration applications, so they can be submitted with confidence.

How do I sign up for BorderPass?

What languages does BorderPass support?

The 24/7 BorderPass Chatbot supports over 50 languages. The entire BorderPass platform supports English and French.  

Who should I contact if I have further questions or need help with BorderPass?

Should you have any questions about BorderPass, you can contact them directly using their AI chatbot feature by typing "create a support ticket" on either on their website or through your Application Hub. 

Submitting your study permit application with BorderPass

How will I know what steps to take to complete my application?

BorderPass provides step-by-step guidance through the Application Hub to help students understand where they are in their immigration journey and what to do next. 

You will also receive email notifications and WhatsApp messages for key dates and reminders regarding your application. So, it is important to create your account with an email address and phone number you have access to and regularly check. 

Are there any additional costs or fees?

As a UM student, your BorderPass subscription is free, and includes: 

  • Expert assistance when submitting your study permit application
  • Direct access to Canadian immigration lawyers and immigration experts
  • Should your initial study permit application be refused, BorderPass helps you either reapply or undergo Judicial Review (applicants are responsible for nominal administrative fees). 

Students who use BorderPass are still responsible for paying any associated IRCC application fees, such as your application fee and biometrics (if applicable). 

How does BorderPass submit my application to IRCC?

BorderPass will submit your application through a professional Lawyer's IRCC Representative Portal. 

How long does it take for BorderPass to submit my study permit application?

Once you submit your documents for review using BorderPass, it takes up to five business days. If your application is complete upon submission and no changes are required, it may be submitted sooner.

How long will it take to receive my study permit from IRCC?

Once BorderPass submits your application, processing times by IRCC will vary depending on your country or residence.

How can I check my application status?

In addition to receiving email and WhatsApp notifications, you will also receive real-time updates regarding your application status in your Application Hub. 

Can BorderPass guarantee that my study permit application will be approved?

No. Immigration application approval is always at the discretion of IRCC. However, having a licensed lawyer review your application prior to submission ensures that it is as strong and accurate as possible. 

What happens if my study permit application is refused?

If your initial study permit application is refused, BorderPass can assist with visa refusal in the following ways: 

  1. Have your application reassessed to better understand why it was refused and strengthen your application before reapplying
  2. Request that your application be reconsidered if key details were missed and seek judicial review to challenge an unfair refusal.
    • Applicants are responsible for any nominal administrative fees associated with the judicial review process.

Access to BorderPass

If I transfer to another institution or withdraw from UM, will I still have access to BorderPass?

Since UM has entered a partnership with BorderPass, should you end your studies early at UM for any reason your access will lapse at the end of your current term of study. 

Once I have signed up, can I stop using BorderPass at anytime?

Yes. You can opt out of using BorderPass at any time. If you choose to stop using BorderPass however, you will lose access to: 

  • Your Application Hub and Document Vault
  • Notifications of key dates and application updates
  • Application support from Canadian immigration lawyers

Can BorderPass help with my family's application?

Yes! For a fee, BorderPass can assist with family immigration to Canada for international students. BorderPass will provide you with clear information about all costs before they are charged to you. 

Once I have graduated, how long will I have access to BorderPass?

After graduating from UM, you will have access to your free BorderPass account for six months to help you transition into your next steps.

Security and Support 

Who can see my information?

Only you and BorderPass will have full access to your application, documents, and data. If you wish to add an authorized third party who can discuss your application on your behalf, you will need to fill out and submit the IRCC Authority to Release Personal Information to a Designated Individual (IMM 5475) form as part of your initial application with BorderPass.

UM staff cannot see your private documents in BorderPass. However, to help support you during the application process, UM staff will be able to see your basic information and application status. 

How does BorderPass keep my data secure and protect my privacy?

BorderPass uses bank-level encryption and is fully compliant with Canadian privacy regulations meaning that your personal data is securely stored. You can review BorderPass' privacy policy to learn more about how your data is protected.  

If I stop using BorderPass, can I still get copies of my previously submitted applications?

If you stop using BorderPass, you will lose access to your account. You will be able to download certain documents that were stored in your Document Vault. Should you require further assistance, you will need to contact BorderPass directly.

Students are encouraged to save copies of all documents they upload as part of their immigration applications as well as any admission documents they receive from UM and any immigration documents from IRCC on a personal device for future use.
