Desautels The Business Law Accelerator

The Desautels Business Law Accelerator (an asset of the Marcel A. Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law) advances excellence in business law education, research, and practice. We create transformative student learning opportunities, provide financial support for leading scholarship, and foster innovative initiatives that bridge academic research with the practical needs of the business law community in Manitoba and beyond.

  • Within the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba, the Desautels Business Law Accelerator serves as a bridge between academic inquiry, professional formation, and the evolving needs of the business law ecosystem. It embeds business law as a dynamic, practice-responsive field, connecting doctrinal learning with real-world application, interdisciplinary collaboration, and institutional innovation. Through coordinated programming, strategic partnerships, and a distributed leadership model, the Accelerator strengthens legal education while advancing research and engagement aligned with contemporary economic realities.

    Its work is grounded in three integrated priorities: creating knowledge that matters through applied, policy-relevant research; reimagining engagement through sustained partnerships ; and empowering learners through experiential opportunities and student-led research and publications. Together, these efforts position the Accelerator as a platform for translating scholarship into meaningful regional and national impact.

Lectures

Law lectures are crucial for fostering public awareness and understanding of legal issues, helping to bridge the gap between legal complexities and everyday life.

Undergraduate Research Awards

UM is the first Canadian university to offer an Undergraduate Research Award open to undergraduate students in all fields and ranges of research, scholarly works or creative activities.

The URA, which is made possible through funding from the Office of the Vice-President (Research & International) and the University of Manitoba Students' Union (UMSU), along with support from faculties, provides undergraduates students with access to exciting research opportunities.

The awards are competitive. Students apply to be mentored for 16 weeks (full-time from May through August) by a professor of their choice. Here are some of the award highlights:

  • Up to 205 URAs are available across all disciplines at UM, plus two (2) additional awards for community-based projects (supported by SSHRC).
  • A minimum of 21 URAs are available for students who self-declare as Indigenous.
  • The award carries a monetary value of $7000.
  • The award is a recognized UM Co-Curricular Record activity.
