Fellowship details

Fellows work on a daily basis alongside experienced and highly-recognized surgeons — Drs. Avi Islur, Ryan Mitchell, Michal Brichacek and Heather Diamond (aesthetic gynecology).

Extensive hands-on training

Trainees will participate as primary surgeon or direct assistant in various surgical procedures and gain significant experience in medical aesthetics including all hyaluronic acid injectables, neuro-modulators and aesthetic lasers.

Surgical procedures will include:

  • primary and revision breast surgery
  • body contouring (including post-bariatric surgery)
  • facial rejuvenation surgery
  • rhinoplasty
  • female cosmetic genital surgery
  • gender affirming top surgery

Fellows will:

  • Participate in training UM Plastic Surgery Residents in the area of aesthetic plastic surgery.
  • Learn about practice and business management in aesthetic surgery.

There are no call requirements outside the clinic.

Training facility

The primary site of the fellowship will be The First Glance Aesthetic Clinic and Surgery Centre, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Research

We support and encourage trainees to participate in clinical research during their training. Fellows will have the opportunity to attend the annual meeting of the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Admission and application requirements

Application deadline: December 31

Applicants are expected to have successfully completed residency training in Plastic Surgery and must be eligible for either “Full Practice” or “Regulated Member – Provisional – Academic – Post Certification Trainee” licensure by The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM).

Malpractice insurance (resident/fellow status) must also be obtained from The Canadian Medical Protective Association

Applicants

Candidates must supply the following documents:

International Medical Graduates (IMGs)

Applicants must:

  • Be medical doctors who are graduates of medical schools listed in the FAIMER directory 

OR

  • Provide confirmation of Pass Result of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part 1 or the United States medical licensure Examination (USMLE) Steps 1 and 2.

IMGs must also submit one (1) of the following documents:

  • IELTS academic version within the last 24 months at the time of application, and achieved a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components in the same sitting.

OR

  • Occupational English Test – Medicine (OET-Medicine), with a minimum grade of B in each of the four subsets in the same sitting.

OR

  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program – General (CELPIP-General) Test, with a minimum score of 9 in each of the four skills in the same sitting.

The Department of Surgery Fellowship Programs are not accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). They are recognized and approved by the Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, Postgraduate Medical Education Executive Council.

Endorsement

This fellowship is endorsed by the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
