National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation | Centre national pour la vérité et la reconciliation, Remembering the Children: A community and academic research gathering at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
Guided by Knowledge Keeper Linda Dano-Chartrand, the Inner City Social Work program began a Remembering the Children project. This project came into being as a response to the sense of loss that students, faculty and staff felt. There was a need to move from helplessness to hope. The project involved making prayer ties for every First Nations child who did not return to their families and communities after being taken to residential schools across Canada. The first 215 prayer ties were made after the announcement from Tk’emlúps. Baskets containing orange cloth squares and tobacco were available in classrooms where students, staff, faculty and community members could create ties and honour the children. Thousands of ties were made, prayed over and assembled with medicines, into bundles. We were honoured to display the project at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, Remembering the Children: A community and academic research gathering in October 2022 at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
