Fellowship details

This Fellowship program - offered through Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) - has emphasis on clinical training, but also includes participation in seminars and didactic learning, a scholarly project, and teaching of undergraduate dental and dental hygiene students, and/or graduate dental orthodontic students.

Training

Attendance

Participants of the Fellowship Program are required to attend on a full-time basis for a minimum duration of 12 months.

Successful completion of the program entails:

  • Passing the final year internal written and/or oral residency examinations.
  • Completing the assigned clinical cases to the clinical standard of practice expected of a graduating senior resident.

Certification and recognition

Upon successfully completing the IDSF Program, graduates will be awarded a certificate of completion from Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME), University of Manitoba.

Subsequently, upon satisfactory completion of the Fellowship training, the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry will issue a letter of support and attestation of program completion to The Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC), which administers the National Dental Specialty Exam (NDSE).

Selection process

Priority consideration will be given to internationally trained orthodontic specialists who can provide evidence of at least two years of clinical practice and active involvement in academia. This involvement may include holding a rank, achieving tenure status, engaging in academic teaching, participating in scholarly activities, and publishing relevant work. Additionally, candidates expressing a desire to pursue a career in academic orthodontic dentistry in Canada will receive preference.

Admission and application requirements

Application deadline: applications are now closed for the 2024-25 intake cycle.

At this time, we cannot confirm whether there will be an intake for 2025-26. If there is an intake for 2025-26 this webpage will be updated with information on how to apply and the deadlines involved.

To apply for the International Dental Specialist Fellowship, you must:

  • Be a graduate of a general dentistry program
  • Completed a full-time, minimum 3-year, orthodontics/dentofacial orthopedics specialty program
  • TOEFL or IELTS is required unless you have received a secondary school diploma and/or university degree from Canada or one of the countries listed on the English Language Proficiency Test Exemption List

For the 2024 intake cycle, applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent resident of Canada.

Required documents

To apply, you'll need to submit the following documents:

  • Personal Statement/Letter of Intent outlining career goals
  • Current curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Three reference letters in English
  • Certificate/diploma of completion of a general dentistry degree and a 3-year full-time specialty training program in orthodontics/dentofacial orthopedics
  • Original transcripts in English
  • Letters of good standing in English from current or previous licensing bodies, if licensed to practice dentistry in any jurisdiction
  • Copies of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, if applicable
  • English Language Proficiency Test:
    • TOEFL within the last 24 months with a minimum score of 100 overall and no component under 100, OR
    • IELTS academic version within the last 24 months with a minimum score of 7.0 in each component from the same sitting, OR
    • Pearson Test of English Academic within the last 24 months with a minimum overall score of 61.
  • TOEFL/IELTS requirement exemption: If you hold a secondary school diploma or university degree from Canada or a country on the English Language Proficiency Test Exemption List.

 

Applicants are responsible for source verification fees for each document, translation fees for certificates of professional conduct, and registration and license fees.

NOTE: Incomplete applications will not be considered. All transcripts and reference letters must be received within 3 weeks of the application submission date. The department will not contact referees or academic institutions for these documents.
