Scholarships
Charles H. Thomsen Award in Landscape Architecture
Value: $3,500
Deadline: January 10, 2025
The awards shall be offered to graduate and undergraduate students who:
- are enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Architecture, in the fourth year of the Bachelor of Environmental Design program (Landscape and Urbanism Option), or in the Faculty of Graduate Studies in either the pre-Master’s or the Master of Landscape Architecture program
- have achieved a minimum sessional grade point average of 3.0 (or equivalent) in the previous year of study
- have submitted a statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining the objectives for a community outreach project related to landscape architecture or environmental design

In honour of Professor Charles H. Thomsen and his career-long contributions to the Department of Landscape Architecture, his colleagues, friends, family, graduates and students established an endowment at the University of Manitoba. The fund will be used to offer a scholarship for students in the Department of Landscape Architecture who are involved with a community outreach project.
Couture Indigenous Achievement Scholarship
Value: $2,000
Deadline: September 20, 2024
Each year, the available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one scholarship to an undergraduate student who:
- is Indigenous (Status, Non-Status, Metis, Inuit);
- is enrolled full-time (minimum 80% course load) in the applicable faculty in either:
the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) program, or
the Bachelor of Environmental Design program; - has completed a minimum of 50 credit hours of study in the respective program;
- has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.0;
- has demonstrated community involvement with an emphasis on the Indigenous community.

Ms. Christabelle O. Couture [B.Comm.(Hons.)/1983] and Mr. Gerald H. Couture [B.E.S./1981, M.C.P./1986] have established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba with an initial gift of $10,000 in 2015, and a commitment to a total gift of $50,000 by 2019. The purpose of the fund is to recognize outstanding academic achievement by Indigenous undergraduate students in the I.H. Asper School of Business and the Faculty of Architecture. Each year, the scholarship will rotate between the I.H. Asper School of Business and the Faculty of Architecture, beginning with the I.H. Asper School of Business in 2017-2018.
The Director of the Aboriginal Business Education Partners (ABEP) program (or designate) from the I.H. Asper School of Business, or the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture (or designate), will name the selection committee for this award in the applicable years.
The Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba has the right to modify the terms of this award if, because of changed conditions, it becomes necessary to do so. Such modification shall conform as closely as possible to the expressed intention of the donor in establishing the award.
James Palmer Lewis Student Award
Value: $1,500
Deadline: September 20, 2024
The available annual income will be used to offer awards to undergraduate students who:
- are enrolled full-time in the Faculty of Architecture, in Year 3 or Year 4 of the Bachelor of Environmental Design program
- have achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.5
- require assistance with tuition, books, supplies, or travel related to their program of study
Applications for funding must include a letter from the candidate that outlines how the award will be used and how it will assist the applicant in their program of study.

From the bequest of James Palmer Lewis, an endowment fund has been established to provide awards in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Mr. Lewis wished that this award would be used for the direct educational benefit of students in the Faculty of Architecture for tuition, books, supplies or travel.
Terry Cristall Scholarship in Environmental Design
Value: $600
Deadline: September 20, 2024
The available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one scholarship to an undergraduate student who:
- is enrolled full-time in the second, third, or fourth year of study in the Faculty of Architecture, in the Bachelor of Environmental Design program
- has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 3.0
- has made a significant contribution to student life in the Faculty of Architecture and/or has demonstrated involvement in community service (e.g. through his or her participation in professional or charitable organizations)
Candidates will be required to submit a letter of application (maximum 250 words) outlining their involvement in the Faculty and/or community service.

Dr. Theodore Hechter (B.Sc./56) and Mrs. S. Gail Hechter (B.A./61, B.S.W./62) have established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba in honour of their nephew, Mr. Terry Cristall (M.Arch./73). The fund will be used to offer scholarships to students in the Faculty of Architecture who, like Mr. Cristall, recognize the importance and value of service to their community and profession.
Busaries
Peggy Jackson Seed Bursary in Architecture
Value: $1,000
Deadline: October 1, 2024
Mrs. Peggy Jackson Seed has established an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba.
The fund shall support a bursary which will be offered to an undergraduate student who:
- is enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture, in the fourth year (ED4) of the Bachelor of Environmental Design, Architecture Option
- has achieved a minimum degree grade point average of 2.5
- has demonstrated involvement in extra-curricular activities, both at the University and in the wider community
- has demonstrated a talent for creativity and innovation through work completed in the program
- has demonstrated financial need on the standard University of Manitoba bursary application form
- a brief letter outlining the applicant’s extra-curricular involvement is to accompany the bursary application form.
