Mandate
UM Libraries provides spaces, knowledge, skills and support related to information and digital literacy, open and eScholarship, research and copyright/intellectual property, and excellent research and archival collections to help researchers, instructors, staff and students reach their goals.
Vision
UM Libraries is a welcoming and inclusive community of people who engage with learners in respectful, reciprocal relationships. We honour and acknowledge Indigenous Peoples as we strive to learn from Indigenous ways to strengthen our practice. UM Libraries is essential for individual, community and institutional success and we will be recognized as a trusted partner in knowledge creation, dissemination, and preservation for generations.

Core services
- UM Libraries identifies, acquires and makes accessible collections that support the academic and research mission of the university.
- UM Libraries provides expert instruction and tools for students to find and evaluate information for learning at the University and into their professional lives.
- UM Libraries provides faculty and student researchers with expertise, infrastructure, tools, and help with research data management and for publishing articles, journals, and datasets.
- UM Libraries provides and supports tools that allow faculties, faculty members, and student researchers to maximize their research impact.
- UM Libraries provides space for students to learn and do research, including quiet study space, group study space, and active learning space
- UM Libraries holds the archives of the University and collections of importance to Manitobans for the entire community and to preserve our cultural heritage and records for future generations.
Strategic goals 2025 - 2028
UM Libraries Strategic Plan aligns with and contributes to the University of Manitoba's strategic plan and objectives: Creating knowledge that matters, Empowering learners and Reimagining engagement.
- Improve technologies and systems for research and knowledge mobilization and increase awareness of intellectual property rights and copyright.
- Build collections that recognize new perspectives and diverse ways of knowing.
- Provide access to Libraries resources for community researchers.
- Increase opportunities for students to connect with research and knowledge in new ways.
- Create accessible, flexible spaces encouraging collaboration and learning.
- Provide learning opportunities for students to improve their information and digital fluency and knowledge of intellectual property.
- Ensure that all staff, faculty, and students feel they belong in library spaces.
