Graduation and Convocation

Graduation: is the term used when you have completed all the requirements for your program and your degree is official awarded.

while

Convocation: is the term used for the ceremony at which degrees, diplomas, or certificates are conferred to graduands.

Please note that your graduation date and convocation date may not be on  the same date.

Before graduation

You must apply!

Graduation application deadlines

  • Deadline for students who will complete their program requirements in Summer term to Apply Online to Graduate in October 2025 (for most Undergraduate students). Students should select Summer as their graduation term.
  • Deadline for students who will complete their program requirements in Fall term to apply online to graduate in February 2026 (for most Undergraduate students). Students should select Fall as their graduation term.
  • Deadline for students who will complete their program requirements in Winter to apply online to graduate in May/June 2026 (for most Undergraduate students). Students should select Winter as their graduation term.

What happens next?

Now that you've declared your intent to graduate, here's what to expect next and what you need to do:

1. Wait for confirmation

Once the deadline passes, the Registrar’s Office will review your record to confirm that you’ve met (or are on track to meet) all graduation requirements. You’ll receive an email when your graduation is approved.

2. Watch for your official convocation invitation

If you selected that you want to attend convocation, you’ll receive an email with your ceremony date, time and location—usually about a month before the event. This message will also include instructions for:

  • Renting your gown, hood and cap (academic regalia)
  • When and where to arrive
  • What to expect on the day

3. Check your mailing address in Aurora

Log in to Aurora and make sure your address is up to date.

4. Invite family and friends

To help ensure each graduate can have people attend the ceremony to cheer them on, we kindly ask that you limit your in-person guests to 5 people. Family and friends also have the option of attending the ceremony virtually on the UM website.

5. Get ready to celebrate

Start thinking about how you want to celebrate—before or after your ceremony. You’ll have a chance to:

  • Get photos taken by a professional photographer
  • Pick up UM mementos, flowers or a degree frame
  • Meet with classmates and instructors one last time as a student

Convocation day

Convocation day schedule

The Convocation Ceremony for the Fort Garry Campus will be held in the Investors Group Athletic Centre (IGAC). On the day of your ceremony, you should report to the James Daly Field House in the Max Bell Centre to pick up your gown and find your position in the procession.

  1. Report to the James Daly Field House in the Max Bell Centre 60 - 90 minutes before your ceremony.
  2. Pick up your gown, hood, and mortarboard at the Gaspard table.
  3. Check in to receive your procession card and your parchment:
    • You will be asked to present photo ID.
    • Your procession card has your name, earned degree, and number for the procession line.
    • You will bring your parchment with you during the ceremony and on to the stage.
  4. There is a phonetic pronunciation space at the bottom of your procession card. Please fill it in to help the presenter correctly pronounce your name.
  5. If you received an Indigenous graduation scarf at the Annual Traditional Graduation Pow Wow, wear it for the ceremony. You can also pick up an Indigenous graduation scarf at the James Daly Field House on the day of the ceremony.
  6. You can have individual professional portraits taken at the field house.
  7. Line up in the procession using the number on your procession card and as directed by the convocation staff.
  8. After the ceremony, attend the post-convocation reception with your guests, held inside the James Daly Field House.

What to wear

The Convocation ceremony is a formal occasion, so dress clothes are appropriate. We recommend that you leave your valuables with a friend or family member.

Wear only the university-approved regalia to cross the stage. University-approved academic regalia includes robes, mortarboards, hoods or stoles.

First Nations, Metis, and Inuit students can wear traditional Indigenous attire in addition to or in lieu of the other approved academic regalia (gowns, hoods, etc.). You can also pick up an Indigenous graduation stole at the James Day Field House on the day of your ceremony.

Please avoid:

  • Carrying items with you other than your degree parchment
  • Corsages and boutonnieres
  • Fraternity or sorority adornments
  • Flowers
